Watch the mist rise in the morning as you experience the isolation, solitude, tranquillity & breathtaking views of the largest tract of relatively untouched natural forest still standing in the north island.

Lake Waikaremoana Motorcamp - Access to Lake Waikaremoana

The remoteness of the region is one of its best features, but as such, there are only two directions from which to enter the region:

  • From the North West, State Highway 38 from Rotorua and passing through Murupara comes down past Lake Waikaremoana and onto Wairoa. It is a scenic and winding road that offers good access to the Eastern part of the park, although it requires care and sometimes experiences some heavy traffic.
  •
  • From the East Coast there are two ways to reach the Lake. From Matawhero (near Gisborne) take the Tiniroto road which then joins State Highway 38 at Frasertown, this is a picturesque route through bushclad hills. Or head south from Gisborne along State Highway 2 until Wairoa (this is a much easier road to travel on sealed road), then take State Highway 38 once again.
