The remoteness of the region is one of its best features, but as such, there are only two directions from which to enter the region:
From the North West, State Highway 38 from Rotorua and passing through Murupara comes down past Lake Waikaremoana and onto Wairoa. It is a scenic and winding road that offers good access to the Eastern part of the park, although it requires care and sometimes experiences some heavy traffic.

From the East Coast there are two ways to reach the Lake. From Matawhero (near Gisborne) take the Tiniroto road which then joins State Highway 38 at Frasertown, this is a picturesque route through bushclad hills. Or head south from Gisborne along State Highway 2 until Wairoa (this is a much easier road to travel on sealed road), then take State Highway 38 once again.
